I am a big fan of Wonder Wolf (Shhh - she is Clawdeen's secret identity!). I love her quick thinking and the green stripes in her hair, but her golden shield is the beast thing ever. Why? Because the dots around the wolf in the center that look like pretty decoration are actually the phases of the moon! |
Phases (say fazes) are the stages or steps of something. When you were little, first you had a rolling phase, then a crawling phase and then a walking phase. When Jane Boolittle was new to Monster High she had a scared phase, a shy phase and then a confident phase! The moon has phases too! Every night the moon looks a little different. Some nights the moon is full. A full moon is a bright perfect circle. Some nights the moon is a crescent and all you can see is thin bright C shape. Some nights there is no moon to see at all and this is called a new moon. There are more phases in between and they repeat over and over again. You can follow the phases on Clawdeen's shield to see what's coming next! Fierce! |
Well, that's furrific, but what does the moon have to do with Wonder Wolf? Years ago people thought that wolves liked to howl at the moon, especially when it is full. It turns out that wolves actually howl to talk to each other - to find each other, tell the news, scare away enemies and keep in touch with friends. Even though we know more about wolves now, people still think that the moon and wolves go together. People even call the full moon that appears in January the Wolf Moon. I guess Clawdeen doesn't mind. In fact, she seems to think the full moon is gore-geous! |
